In a bid to attract scholars with innovative approach, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has done away with the election for the post of dean. As many educationists prefer to stay away from polls, politicised to fulfil ‘other’ aims, the university has decided to eliminate the apparent barrier for aspiring and competent candidates who wish to associate with the university to contribute to the field education.
To implement this decision, GTU issued a circular on Monday inviting applications from the eligible persons. The university plans to select 19 deans for its four disciplines: engineering, management, MCA and pharmacy. It also aims at appointing five associate deans for its polytechnic courses.
For an effective management, the university has made five educational zones: Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vidyanagar, Surat and Rajkot and each zone will have a dean who will function separately and will be responsible to the director of the university.
When contacted, GTU Vice-Chancellor Akshai Aggarwal said: “We are trying our best to provide quality education to our students. It is a dean’s responsibility to oversee and revise the curriculum in order to keep pace with the latest development in the field. It is his vision that leads to students’ best performance. Therefore, we want best educationists for the posts who can contribute to students’ development. The circular has been issued to get the desired candidates.”
Selection committee
The technological university plans to form a selection committee which will shortlist candidates from the application received. The shorlisted candidates have to make a presentation before the panel which will have experts and known educationists from across the country.
