Students and scores of other Amdavadis stooped for a good cause on Friday. They bent their back and soiled their hands to rid their surroundings of the ugly pouches for gutkha and tobacco products.
Aash Foundation, Jay Ho group and three schools — Tripada, F D, and A G Teachers’ — volunteered to do their best to rid Ahmedabad of the pouches. In a few hours more than 100 students, their teachers and volunteers of the youth groups collected thousands of empty gutkha pouches around their schools and neighbourhoods and deposited them at the collection centres in various parts of city.
More than 100 students made posters and wrote slogans to spread awareness on the issue.
“This is a great initiative that explores both cleanliness and environment conservation. These small pouches escape the sanitation workers’ broom and gets deposited on roadside vegetation. This is harmful,” said F D High School Principal M I Gena.
A G Teachers’ High School Principal Nirav Thakker wanted such a campaign initiated regularly. “We are happy to join AM which has been proactive on the issue of cleanliness,” he added.
Archit Bhatt, director of Tripada group of schools said that the drive was a good way to remove gutkha pouches from streets and send out the right message to society. “Our students prepared slogans and posters for the campaign so that more awareness could be created.”
Jaydeep Raval of Aash Foundation said, “I am impressed with the initiative. I had never thought that cleanliness can be taken to such a micro level. It is a great environment conservation initiative.” His group set up a collection centre near Panjrapole and Bodakdev.
Priyank Gandhi of Jay Ho group that set up collection centre in Maninagar said, “This should be made a regular event. It should be a city-wide campaign.”
Reliance Fibre Ltd, that runs WOW project, will take these plastic pouches to get them recycled. Said Girish Baluni of Reliance Fibre, “Gutkha pouches are real evil. It is necessary to collect them for the good health of our planet. This is really a good initiative.”
