The Western Railway has directed Ahmedabad and Vadodara railway divisions to strengthen the tracks between the two cities so that trains can travel at a speed of 130 km per hour. At present, the trains on the route run at a speed of 100 kmph.
The tracks will be upgraded by December, say railway officials. Once that is done, Ahmedabad passengers bound for Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and south India can reach their destinations 25-30 minutes faster.
Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Garud said: “The tracks between Ahmedabad and Vadodara will be upgraded within the next six months. The speed-raising will benefit passengers bound for Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and south India via Vadodara as it will reduce the travel time by 25-30 minutes. This will also reduce queuing of trains on the tracks. Later, we can even think of running more trains on the route.”
Of the tracks requiring upgradation, 90 per cent fall under the jurisdiction of Vadodara railway division. “The bearing capacity of the track-bed foundation on Ahmedabad-Vadodara route was not sufficient for high speeds. It needed improvement,” said an official of Vadodara railway division on condition of anonymity.
The upgradation will be carried out by lifting the tracks and increasing the ballast which supports them. This will improve the gradient profile, thereby allowing the trains to travel at higher speed.
“Nearly 60 per cent of the work is over. We thought we could complete the upgradation by March, but it will take some more time. The trial run on the upgraded portion has been successful. Once the tracks are ready, trains can travel at a speed of 120-130 kmph instead of the current 100 kmph. We will also have more signals on the route,” the official said.
Every day, 70-75 trains run on Ahmedabad-Vadodara route. As many as 1 lakh passengers travel daily in these trains.
