Aspiring college teachers who need to clear National Education Test (NET) or its State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) have a help on hand thanks to University Granthnirman Board (UGB).
The nodal agency for university publications has come up with books with question banks and answers to help those writing the tests prepare better.
“The qualifying percentage in NET and SLET is just about 2. One of the main reasons is the lack of useful literature for the candidates. Now, you can expect pass percentage to go up in the state. We have priced the book quite reasonably so that more students can benefit from the initiative,” said a UGB official.
Books in two subjects are already out and those for 24 more subjects will be available in the next 10 days, he added.
The board took up the project looking at the major problem most of the aspiring lecturers faced, that of the lack of “syllabus” for the national or state level test. The UGB got a question bank with answers prepared by a panel of experts in 26 subjects in English and Gujarati languages.
“The book will be useful to candidates who are preparing for both NET and SLET,” the official said.
SLET is conducted in 26 subjects whereas NET is conducted for 77 subjects twice in a year.

ALL ABOUT NET/SLET
SLET was last held on October 24, 2010. Candidates who qualify in this test are eligible to apply for the post of lecturer in Gujarat state only where those who clear NET are eligible for lectureship across the country.
The state level test was last conducted in 20 subjects: Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Life Sciences, Hindi, Gujarati, Sanskrit, History, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, English, Education, Psychology, Library and Information Science, Law, Commerce, Computer Science and Applications, Physical Education and Home Science.
Students can opt to write the test in English or Gujarati for all subjects except science and language papers. Language papers are to be answered in the language concerned only.
Students with a master’s or equivalent degree from an Indian university recognised by the University Grants Commission under the subjects mentioned above with a minimum 55 per cent marks are eligible to take the test.
Candidates are required to appear in the subject of their Post Graduation only. In case the subject of a candidate is not included in the list of SET subjects, the candidates may appear in UGC NET/ UGC CSIR NET which is held twice a year.
While NET/SLET is the minimum eligibility condition for recruitment and appointment of lecturers in universities/colleges/institutions, those with PhD are excepted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET.
There is no age limit for writing the test.

THREE PAPERS, NEGATIVE MARKING
SLET consists of three papers, all taken on one day in two separate sessions.
Paper-1 is of general nature, intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.
Paper-2 consists of questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. Each of these papers consists of a test booklet containing 50 compulsory objective-type questions of two marks each.
Paper-1 and 2 are of 75 minutes duration each and each carry maximum of 100 marks. There is negative marking in these papers.
Paper-3 consists of only descriptive questions from the subject selected by the candidate. The candidate will be required to attempt questions in the space provided in the test booklet.
