The All India Counsil for Technical Education has announced new guidelines according to which students can get admission for diploma courses in Pharmacy.

Optimistic
This announcement has been received with great optimisim by the pharmacy colleges. The number of students opting for diploma pharmacy had gone down drastically in the state in past two-three years. But with the new guidelines it is expected that more students will opt for the corse.

Eligibility
According to sources the main reason for less students opting for diploma pharmacy was the eligibility criterion of being a class XII passout. “Students after completing their HSC preferred to go for a degree rather than a diploma course. So the diploma seats in the colleges stayed empty. Only students who couldn’t afford the fees for a degree course opted for a diploma,” a source said. Now, that pharmacy diploma has been made accessible to Class X students just like engineering diploma courses, “we expect more students to opt for it,” he said.

900 seats empty
Of the 1000 seats for diploma in pharmacy, 900 had no takers in 2010. Some of the colleges offered discounts on the fees to attract students. Member Secretary of Admission Committee for Professional Courses MN Patel said, “We welcome the AICTE decision. It will not only benefit the diploma colleges but will also be beneficial for students who want to take up the course after their SSC.”
