Gujarat University (GU) is all ready to introduce the semester system for its undergraduate courses beginning June 2011. In 2010, GU had asked the colleges to conduct first year (FY) and second year (SY) exams in a bid to cut down costs and deal with staff shortage.
However, since the semester system was to be introduced in June 2011, colleges requested GU to conduct the FY, SY exams. This, to avoid any confusion when the examination system was switching from mark-based to grade-based system.
Therefore, agreeing to the demands of the colleges, GU agreed to conduct the FY and SY exams in 2010. All this is set to change from this academic year.

Observer to be sent
As per the new system, question papers will be set by the university and colleges will conduct the exams. GU will also send an observer to the colleges conducting exams.
The onus of assessing the answer papers, however, lies on the colleges. They will have to collate the results and send the result sheet to the university. The GU will then prepare marksheets and send them back to the colleges.
“Since GU is issuing marksheets to the colleges, it will do away with discrepancies and also check malpractices,” said a source, on condition of anonymity. The third year exam, however, will be conducted by the university.

New Weightage
As per the new system, weightage will not be given to FY and SY marks in the TY marksheet. This was not the case earlier. GU has decided not to give weightage to FY and SY marks because colleges are conducting the exam for the two years.

Beneficial evaluation
“If weightage is given to FY and SY marks, some of the colleges conducting exams can favour their students by giving them more marks, thinking it will help them score better in the third year. What happens then is that students of other colleges that conduct strict checking of answer papers will score less in FY and SY. Thus meritorious students will suffer if weightage is given to FY and SY marks,” said a source. The semester system will be implemented after approval by executive council.
