In an unique initiative, Gujarat University is going to start ‘Save birds’ campaign to spread awareness among the students about the danger to birds during Uttarayan. It will also sensitise students towards the need to refrain from flying kites from 6 am to 8 am and from 5 pm to 7 pm.
Last week, State Principal Secretary S K Nanda had issued a directive to the police commissioners and deputy superintendents of police asking them to ensure kite-flying is banned from 6 am to 8 am and from 5 pm to 7 pm as the avian activity is at its peak during these hours.
GU is the first university in the state to undertake such an initiative. GU Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi said, “Very high number of youth celebrate Uttrayan. Most of these youths are students. Every year hundreds of birds get injured during the kite festival. If we are able to create awareness among at least 10 per cent of the GU student, it will make a huge difference.” GU has 350 colleges under it and a total of 3,50,000 students.
As part its initiative, GU will send out SMSes to students urging them to follow the government guidelines and refrain from flying kites at the stipulated time. It will also send cirrculars to all GU colleges asking students to forwards the SMS to five other people. This way the univesrity will be able to reach out to a larger number of youths.
On Wednesday, students from all colleges under the GU will take an oath, promising not to fly kites from 6 am to 8 am and from 5 pm to 7 pm. “Most of the students know about the danger to birds during Uttarayan. But they have no idea how to tackle the proble. Our initiative is to guide them so that all types of casualties can be avoided.
GU plans to conduct this initiative every year. From next year, the university will also put up posters to spread awareness. Every year during Uttarayan, scores of birds die due to Manja injuries.
