The Roads and Buildings (R &B) department has issued notices to government offices operating out of New Mental Hospital Campus asking them to vacate the place. The space, say sources, will be utilised to build hostels and quarters for B J Medical College staff and students.
However, the move will inconvenience the employees of the offices that function here as well as people who frequent them. The campus is accessible to people from across the city since it is centrally located. It also has a huge parking space.
Currently, offices of AIDS Control Society, Employment Exchange, CID Crime, Customs and Excise, Forest Department, Food and Drugs Department, Weights and Measures Department, Gujarat Pharmacy Council, District Registrar Cooperative Society, Fisheries department, Raksha University and Gujarat Industrial Security Forces operate out of this campus.
Last month, additional engineer of R&B department issued a notice that the campus is being given to health and family welfare department work for the development of Civil Hospital.

Where do these offices go?
Interestingly, the R &B department is responsible for allocating spaces to these government offices. However, when the Employment Exchange wrote to it seeking a place where it could shift, the department wrote back saying they do not have space.
The exchange wrote to R&B department requesting they be given space in any of these places: GMDC Building, Gujarat College campus, Krishi Bhavan, Polytechnic compound and Lal Darwaza multistoreyed building.
The superintendent engineer wrote back saying: “We do not have space in any of the buildings. As and when space is available we will think about giving it to you.” The exchange is visited by thousands of people every day and also has a foreign cell and women’s cell.
Sources at state government’s Planning and Implementation Unit said: “As part of development of Civil Hospital, the mental hospital campus will be used to provide hostels and quarters to students and staff of Civil and BJ Medical College.”
Civil Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr M M Prabhakar said, “According to the information I have, plans are on the anvil to construct staff quarters and hostels on the mental hospital campus. The health department or the PIU will be able to give you more details.” Despite several attempts minister of state for health Jayanarayan Vyas could not be contacted.
