English, internet training for state college teachers

With an aim to improve the standard of teaching and quality of students, 66 mentors chosen by Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat will conduct training sessions for teachers

A unique Knowledge Management Programme, conceptualised by Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat (KCG), will soon be introduced in over 900 colleges across the state to improve the quality of teaching.
A two-day workshop has been organised for expert trainers at Maninagar Science College today. They will then mentor the college teachers.
As many as 66 experts — 33 English professors and 33 information and communication technology professors — will participate along with 33 students who will provide their feedback on the effectiveness of the workshop.
The aim of the programme is to add value to the teaching techniques and promote capacity building in the colleges. The 66 mentors will train select teachers from state’s colleges who in turn will train their colleagues.
English is the most preferred medium of communication across the globe. Teachers who teach through the medium of Gujarati or Hindi may lose out on the updates in their area of expertise since not many journals or books are published in those languages.
To help keep themselves abreast of what’s happening in their respective disciplines, the teachers will be trained not only in English but also in content searching on the internet.
A session to train them on how to communicate effectively with the students will also be conducted by the mentors. Since increasing number of colleges are promoting use of audiovisual aids and powerpoint presentations, the teachers will also be taught how to prepare slides etc.
“There will be a notable difference in the quality of teaching in the next two years. It will reflect on the quality of students we produce,” said a KCG officer.
The higher education department has set up a monitoring committee to conduct academic and administrative audit in the colleges. The committee members will periodically visit the colleges to understand the problems faced by teachers and the students and find solutions for the same.
