In a first of its kind of endeavour, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has come up with a project that will directly link curriculum to the industries and train students according to the industries’ need. The project, Navsarjan Sankul, will promote industry-based research programmes to make students aware of the prevalent technical trends in the industrial sector and will also give impetus to industrial growth.
Brainchild of Professor Anil Gupta and GTU think tank, the project proposes 20 Navsarjan Sankul across the state for which the locations have been identified. These premises will bring together colleges, technical institutes and industry bodies like GIDC under one umbrella.

Industries to assign projects to students
“Industries do not have time and sometime do not have adequate manpower to carry out research for their products. Similarly, students do not have much insight into industrial development and requirements. This project will bridge the gap between the two. Industries can themselves approach students and assign research projects to them,” said a source in GTU.
The students will carry out the project under the guidance of their professors while the input will be provided by industry experts. “The evaluation will be done by both — the professors and industry experts concerned,” said the source. The prime minister will also be briefed on the concept of this project soon, the source said.

GCCI, Assocham to extend helping hand
The technological university plans to establish all 20 Navsarjan Sankuls by April next year. “We are in talk with several industries so that we can attract maximum of them to the campus. GCCI and Assocham have agreed to be a part of the project,” said GTU Vice Chancellor Akshai Aggarwal. There are 10,000 students at GTU. And if 1000 projects get successful, it will be a great achievement, he said.
