Students turning 18 can get registered as a voter at their college now. The State Election Commission has asked educational institutes to nominate a staff member who would take the details of such students and coordinate with the collector’s office to ensure students’ inclusion in the electoral roll.
The official at the college will be assisted by student volunteers. Those turning 18 on January 1, 2011, will have to fill in a form and submit a photograph along with it to the official concerned at their institute. The institution’s head will attest the form after checking the details of the students as available with the institute.
“The initiative is a win-win for all. Apart from strengthening the democratic process, the election commission cuts down on part of the time and resources needed to update the electoral roll periodically. The students do not have to wait for the next round of revision to get their names registered,” said an official of Gujarat Technological University (GTU) which has already implemented the programme.
Said B K Jain of MG Science Institute, “Students are participating in the programme with enthusiasm. As many as 184 students have filled in registration forms so far at our college. We will repeat this process in December every year. Students who do not know how to get registered will benefit greatly.”
The college official will also give a quick orientation to the students concerned on how to fill in forms. GTU has designated an official who will coordinate with the officials concerned in colleges affiliated to it.
