It wasn’t Amdavadis alone who had a blast this Diwali in November. Even the Ahmedabad Railway Division had a busy month, with its ticket checkers managing to collect a record breaking amount of Rs 69.47 lakh in fines.
The travelling ticket checkers (TTCs) collected fines for offences like ticketless travelling, journeying on other’s ticket, irregular travel (travelling in first class with a ticket for second class) etc.
“This is the highest collection ever by the Ahmedabad division,” said Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Garud said. Ticket checkers Sailesh Kumar, V M Vania, Rajiv Mishra, Saji Philip, Neeraj Mehta and B S Shekhavat collected the highest fine.
The reason for such high collection is that the senior authorities in the railways scrutinise the work done by the ticket checkers and they are appropriately rewarded.
“We always carry out such ticket-checking drives to check the offenders. Also the TTCs are given special incentives for carrying out their duties. The TTCs who collect the maximum fine are given 4 per cent to 5 per cent of the amount as incentive according to the Indian Railways guidelines,” said Senior Division Commission Manager Dinesh Chanchodia.
According to the data given by the Ahmedabad division, 16,790 offenders were fined in November compared to 9,684 cases in the same month last year.
The collection has risen by Rs 36.7 lakh compared to November 2009. This year in November, Rs 12.80 lakh was collected by fining 3152 travellers for travelling without tickets while Rs 3.18 lakh was collected through fines from people travelling on other’s tickets.
Also, many touts and anti-socials were detained by officials. A senior official from the railways said, “These touts corner tickets and then sell them to passengers at higher rates. This practice is rampant during vacations.” Officials said that since the raids are not surprise ones, many of the touts manage to avoid being caught.
