Gujarat University (GU) has finally found its theme song. Titled ‘Vandan Abhinandan’, the ditty is aimed at making students feel proud of their association with the varsity. It will be played for the first time today during a function at GU’s Senate Hall to mark 60 years of the university.
The 3.10-minute song, which has references to Sardar Patel and Anand Shankar, has been written by Tushar Shukla and composed by Narendra Shastri. Interestingly, it incorporates the three ragas — Desh, Kalavati and Malhar — used in the national anthem and song. “Indian classical instruments dominate the music, but you will also find traces of western in some parts,” GU V-C Parimal Trivedi said. “Vandan Abhinandan will help students connect with the university’s values and vision.”
He said that every college affiliated to GU would be given a CD containing the theme song and its two instrumental versions. “It will be mandatory for colleges associated with us to either play or sing the song before or after their prayer meets. Students and faculty members will have to stand when it is played or sung,” Trivedi said. More than 370 colleges are affiliated to GU.
Vandan Abhinandan not only highlights the university’s vision and progress, but also refers to the Gujarati pride and culture. It will be played for the first time today at GU to mark the varsity’s foundation day and diamond jubilee. State education minister Ramanlal Vora will attend the function. A host of ribbon-cutting events, including the inauguration of career development counselling centre, have been lined up for today.
