Gujarat University has retracted its decision of assigning first and second year graduation exams to colleges. In March this year, the university had announced that it will only be conducting the third year exams to reduce its cost burden and deal with staff shortage. But the principals’ association had opposed the decision saying if colleges were allowed to hold FY and SY exams, the quality of students would be affected.
Even academicians had said the move will reduce GU’s burden, but it will lead to malpractice by colleges, who may try to favour their students or issue marksheets to undeserving candidates.
As many as 2.5 lakh students pursue FY and SY courses in GU-affiliated colleges. Taking cognisance of the requests made by colleges affiliated to it, the university has finally decided to conduct the FY and SY exams.
A source said: “We also plan to introduce the grading system from the next year for graduation. The system is already in place for the PG courses. Since it will be the first time for colleges, we thought we should conduct the exams else a switch from mark-based to grade-based system next year will cause too much of confusion. Later on, maybe, the university can ask the colleges to conduct exams. But as of now exams for all three years of graduation will be held by GU.”
The association of college principals had been objecting to GU’s earlier decision of asking colleges to conduct FY and SY exams. It said that marksheets issued by colleges to FY and SY students might not be recognised by foreign institutes. “FY and SY marksheets will lose significance if GU does not conduct exams in these years. Moreover, some disreputable colleges may make issuing marksheet a business,” a principal said.
He said that earlier, when colleges used to hold SY exams, several cases of cheating and malpractice were reported. “This had prompted the GU to conduct tests in all the three years. The university should continue with this practice,” the principal said.
