The Ahmedabad University (AU) has embarked on an ambitious project that will link all its colleges, students and faculty in an online endeavour that will facilitate the easy flow of information. By Diwali, AU wants to put in place an Enterprise Resource Planning system to manage its internal and external resources.
The Rs 1.5-crore project will incorporate five colleges and 20,000 students. AU’s Board of Management Chairman Praful Anubhai said, “Our purpose is to bring about a positive change with a paperless, environment-friendly endeavour. Through the system we will be able to track our progress, analyse our shortcomings and better ourselves.”
Whether the courses are successful, if students are performing or not, if parents are happy with their ward’s progress or not will all be known online and steps can be taken to address them. A teacher’s daily schedule in terms of classes he/she will take, whether there is any change in the timetable can be accessed by the student.
Online interactions between students, student and teacher, teacher and teacher, student and administration, teacher and parents, parents and teachers will all be possible once the system is in place. Parents will be able to see their child’s academic progress, fees paid and other administrative details. Since a trimester system is followed by the university, the results will be declared online.
Even sitting at home, students can send across their assignments to teachers. Whether the teacher has accepted the assignment or not responded in the given time frame, will be taken into account. The entire system is transparent and accountability of the student and teacher will come into focus, according to Anubhai.
Students who wish to know the status of books in the library will be able to do so. They can even reserve their books online. To keep their identity unique, the university will issue smart cards to the students soon after Diwali. For those students who don’t have access to computers, the university will ensure that internet is available to them in their respective colleges from 8 am to 8 pm.
