Amdavadi students are going to be spoilt for choice. After Ahmedabad Education Society (AES) and Gujarat Law Society (GLS), another group has decided to turn into a full-fledged university.
JG Group of Colleges, which is currently affiliated with Gujarat University (GU), has plunged into paperwork to apply for varsity status.
The group’s officials told Mirror that their proposal would be forwarded to the state government by December. They also said that they were scouting for land to set up the proposed university’s headquarters. “We are looking for space on SG Highway,” the director of the educational group, Saurabh Choksi, said.
Interestingly, for its planned varsity, JG Group is looking for a tie-up with a foreign university. “We want to match the teaching standards of best institutes abroad,” Choksi said. The group runs 16 campuses in the city, offering a range of courses from commerce, performing arts, management to nursing and physiotherapy.
“Once our university becomes operational, we will introduce hotel management and law, among other courses,” Choksi said. He said that JG Group’s university would increase competition among existing varsities, and students would benefit from this. “The quality of education will improve,” he said.
The organisation’s chairman, John Geevarghese, said that the planned varsity would focus on offering “job-oriented courses”. “If things go as planned, we intend to start the university by 2013. Students who enrol at our varsity will also be able to study at the campus of our foreign affiliate,” he said.
The state government’s nod for JG Group’s varsity may not be hard to come by. In the past few years, the government has shown pliancy while granting permission to private institutes, say academics. Earlier this year, GLS had revealed its plans to set up its own university. If GLS and JG’s proposals are approved, the number of universities in Ahmedabad will go up to 10.
This, however, may not bode well for GU as the approvals will mark departure of two leading educational groups from its fold.
