Soon after announcing that English will be the medium of instruction for first year BSc students from the new academic session, the Gujarat University made a complete U-turn, allowing science colleges to take classes in Gujarati.
In April this year, principals of science college had a meeting with the Gujarat University vice chancellor, where they unanimously decided to take first year science classes in English. However, the vice chancellor changed his stance as soon as the new academic session commenced.
Citing problems faced by students from rural areas in coping with English, colleges were instructed to allow teaching in Gujarati in first year BSc. B K Jain, principal of M G Science College, said, “The VC informed us orally about this measure and we have continued with the Gujarati medium in the first year BSc.”
There are nine science colleges in Ahmedabad which are affiliated to Gujarat University. Every year more than 3,500 students get enrolled to these colleges for BSc course. VC Parimal Trivedi said, “Students of Science colleges in villages and rural students who study science in the city were finding it difficult to understand in English, hence we decided to revert to teaching in Gujarati.
Accordingly, colleges were instructed to continue teaching in Gujarati for first year BSc students.” A principal of a science college, who did not wished to be named, said, “Professors who have been teaching science in Gujarati for the past 20 years, were also finding it difficult to suddenly teaching in English after teaching for so many years in Gujarati. It’s a big relief for them.”
