Gujarat University’s (GU) myopic view on sanctioning more BBA and BCA colleges for professional courses has jeopardised future of more than 20 students. On July 16, executive council of university had sanctioned nine colleges, and within a month, half of them have decided to shut down for lack of admissions, while remaining are on the verge of closure, for this academic year.
What is surprising is that the university had allegedly went out of the way to oblige a handful of influential politicians to grant them permission for the institutes without even getting a feasibility report. Sources in the education sector believe that the university committee for sanctioning of colleges was under tremendous political pressure to give a go-ahead, despite the fact that there was no need for additional institutes for the BBA and BCA.
The GU Vice Chancellor, Parimal Trivedi said: “There were many admission in BBA and BCA. And, the Need Committee of the University had supported setting up new colleges to accommodate large number of students.” However, he confirmed that there were very few admissions in new colleges, and said many colleges may shuit down for this year. About the future of these students, he said the students from these institutes would be shifted to Keka Shastri college in Maninagar.
For the last seven years the university had not sanctioned a single college, simply, because there was no need for a new college, while the demand and supply was proportionate. But sources said, decison to sanction was based to oblige political bigwigs, instead of looking into the genuine need for more colleges, especially for BBA and BCA. Moreover, admissions to the nine new collages were centralised, and were included in the main stream process.
Surprisingly, none of the nine colleges for BBA and BCA courses could reach double digits in getting admissions. Kameshwar BBA College in Sargasan near Gandhinagara could get only seven admissions. A student of the college on condition of anonymity said, “The college authorities had asked us to come on August 8. When we went to the college, we saw that the college was deserted, there were barely three or four students.” He added that 10 days ago, the college authorities shocked them by saying that they were not running the college, and refunded the admission fee.
