Rain water seep into the LD Engineering College gymnasium where canteen staff members sleep and equipment lie unused

Set up to boost students’ fitness level, the gymnasium at the LD College of Engineering is now yearning for its own good health. Out of use for two years now, the gym has virtually turned into a dilapidated structure and looks nothing more than a junkyard. Moreover, its equipment are either gathering dust or are being used for other purposes by canteen staff.
As the gym is not frequented by students, the canteen staff has made it their rest room and use it according to their convince. For example, the TT table has become a bed where staff relax. This is not all. The incessant rains have caused leakage all over the ceiling. Even, the electrical wires are exposed, posing the threat of short circuit.
Gym facilities for Rs 50
To avail of the services of the gym, a student has to just pay Rs 50. However, the students, who have paid the fee, are now deprived of the facilities due to its poor condition. Many of them are now spending more money on private gym which are quite expensive compared to college gym.
“The gym is in sorry state because of the tussle between college authorities and the PWD. We have made several complaints to the authorities but to no avail. All expensive equipment like treadmill and cycle are out of order. We are not able to take benefit of the gym just because it is not maintained properly,” Chintan Patel, one of the students of the college said.
When contacted, Principal M N Patel said: “We had modernised the gym a few years back. But there was not enough staff to maintain it properly. But now we have set-up a five member com-mittee to look into the upgradation and maintenance of the gym. It will be ready for use in three months.”
