The Gujarat Technological University (GTU), which introduced an online GCET for MBA and MCA aspirants last year, is now preparing for another major step. The varsity intends to conduct monthly online tests for students of engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA colleges.
GTU V-C Akshai Aggarwal told Mirror that the tests, which will contain multiple-choice questions, would be introduced in 2011. The move, he said, would enable colleges to shift from one-time assessment model to continuous and credit-based assessment model.
"Students stand to gain the most as they will be able to track their progress every month,” he said.
Like in online version of GCET, students of engineering, pharmacy, MBA and MCA colleges affiliated with GTU will get their results immediately after taking the monthly tests.
“The online GCET has been a success. Now, we want to take the next step by introducing online examinations for colleges affiliated to GTU,” Aggarwal said. “We will prepare a road map for implementing the new system. We will set up necessary infrastructure and train teachers.”
The proposed examination method will save the colleges the effort of conducting mid-term tests, which many students view as a burden. “It will be a completely computerised system. We will store students’ results on a server, which will also generate questions for the monthly exams,” the GTU V-C said. The varsity, he said, would make use of technology to ease students’ academic burden.
GTU is apparently the first varsity in the country to propose such a system. “Initially, it will be introduced on a pilot basis. Slowly, it will be extended to affiliated colleges across the state,” Aggarwal said.
There is also a possibility that the state government may give the GTU the responsibility of conducting GujCET online. The education department has reportedly held talks with GTU officials in this regard. More than 1.45 lakh students are enrolled in colleges linked to GTU.
