Once smitten, the Railways doesn’t want to take any more chances. An early morning blast in the Karnavati Express on platform number 2 in 2004 shook the authorities into installing 17 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras on platforms 1 to 5 of the Ahmedabad Railway Station.
However, the situation has drastically changed since then following the serial blasts in the city.
Taking into account the constant terror threat, the railway authorities have decided to install more than a hundred CCTV cameras in the entire railway premises in Kalupur. Installation will be completed in five months.
Tenders have already been floated for these cameras numbering 103, of which 56 will be fixed ones, 40 Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) cameras and 5 dome cameras. Any place where cable digging or laying is not possible, two sets of wireless cameras will be installed.
Each camera shall have video dual stream capability for viewing and recording at different resolution and frame per second.
The system will also monitor and trigger an alarm in case of intrusion detection, detection of an object left behind, overcrowding or tampering of any camera.
According to divisional railway authority, the surveillance system will be connected to the optical or other communication backbone of railways, making it easy to monitor any camera from divisional or zonal headquarters during emergency or whenever desired.
Ten cameras will be installed at entry and exit points, plus the VIP entrance, while the other cameras will be installed at platforms, yards, parcel office, waiting rooms, circulating area (including parking) and other areas.
The IP (network) camera will be freely accessible and programmable from the control room.
Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Garud said, “We will be spending Rs 2.4 crore on video surveillance system and Rs 30 lakh on baggage screening system. Both will be operational by December. We have covered all points that fall under our jurisdiction and will use the latest technology.
“We’ve taken suggestions from the Gujarat ATS on the appropriate places to install the cameras. We want to do the utmost for the security and safety of those visiting the railway station.”
Screening system
Personal and baggage screening system will be located at entrance gates of platforms of the railway station to screen passengers and their baggage
This system provides high resolution and ultra clear images for easy object identification with latest technology of computer control and image processing.
