The popular cart service started at the railway station amid fanfare a few weeks back stands suspended as the vehicle conked out three days ago. Senior citizens and physically challenged people to whom the golfcart had come as a big relief are once again put to great inconvenience.
According to senior railway officials, the brake of the cart started malfunctioning three days ago following which the service was stopped.
“We accept, senior citizens and physically challenged people are suffering because of the suspension of the service. We have ordered immediate repair of the vehicle, but it will take a few days before the service could be resumed. The maintenance persons are expected her within two days,” said Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Garud.
“The service had become quite popular as it benefited senior citizens physically challenged passengers. Looking at its success we have already placed order for one more vehicle. Passengers will not face any problem once it arrives,” Garud added.
But until them it is tough on the passengers with special needs. “My kid is polio-stricken. We had to travel to Godhra and the train was to arrive at platform number 5. When I went to the TTE office from where one can avail of the service, I was told that the vehicle had broken down,” said Snehal Shah who was travelling to Godhra on Monday with his family.
“My mother is old and suffers from terrible backache. With great difficulty they could move from platform 1 to 5,” he said.
The golfcart, introduced at the Ahmedabad railway station in the first week of May, helped the needy to get a free ride from platform 1 to their designated train compartments. However, its movement was far from smooth as the platforms were ill-equipped to accommodate the vehicle. With tens of thousands of people visiting the station everyday, the driver was finding it difficult to manoeuvre the four-seater cart.
When fully functional, the golfcart service will be operated in three shifts in a public-private partnership. There will be three drivers and three supervisors.
