Bundles of checked answer papers of Gujarat Technological University dumped on the staircase of a city mall is metaphorical of the importance given to education in the state. It is ironical that GTU, that can be credited with a foolproof system to make online GCET exams a success, had no check in place to prevent such a grave error.
On Thursday, curious visitors at APM Mall near Sattadhar crossroads were seen turning the packets lined up on the stairs to see what they contained. Those who found out these were corrected answer papers of engineering and pharmacy exams called up their friends and acquaintances and informed them about it.
The packet covers bore details like the name of the examiner, the subject code, the date of the exam and the date of submission of checked answer papers.
Some of the answersheets were of exams conducted early this month. The bundles, over 100 in number, had arrived at an office of a data entry vendor in the mall for scanning of answersheets. After the work was done, the bundles were dumped on the staircase at the ground floor.
This reporter went to the mall on Thursday and examined the packets before clicking photographs on his cellphone. There was no one to stop him. Had anyone flicked one of these packets just for fun, no one would have probably come to know of it.
What would then have happened if the student applying for paper re-checking had his answer sheet in that stolen packet? What would the GTU have done about it ? When the reporter brought the carelessness to the notice of N N Bhuptani, incharge registrar of GTU, he could not believe it at first.
He crosschecked the same, and after getting convinced it wasn’t rumour, told Mirror: “Data entry, for the purpose of making marksheets, is done at that mall. Henceforth, care will be taken to ensure these are not placed carelessly. All the loopholes in the paper checking system will be plugged. We are taking this matter very seriously.” Sources said that even the marksheets are printed at the data entry vendor’s office.
