The only post graduate home science college in the city, which was lost in the narrow lanes of Sankdi Sheri, will finally have a new address. Also the first women’s college, B D Arts College, which has been running since 1956, will now be housed at the C U Shah Arts College campus in Lal Darwaja.
The authorities cite two reasons for this shift after almost 54 years. One of the reasons being the area where the college is in a narrow, congested lane. Buses don’t ply here, hence college students, all girls, find it difficult to walk down all the way from Lal Darwaja.
The other reason is the fact that the location of the college is not so woman- friendly, which raises concern for the girls. Both these factors have contributed to the decline in the number of girls coming to the college. For the past two-and-a-half years, the number has gone down by almost half.
A year ago, a slab had fallen at the college. The fire deparment too has not given the all clear to the building.
The management, which comes under the Gujarat Law Society, has now taken note of this. With latest laboratory equipment being set up for the home science students, Sudhir Nanavati, executive managing trustee of GLS, says, “Here students will be given better facilities. This is one of top girls colleges in the city. We are making attempts not to let this college die and taking all the necessary steps to ensure that the college does much better.”
