A group of enthusiastic bikers from the city will be leaving for Khardung La, the world’s highest motorable mountain pass with a height of 18,380 ft. The bikers, 19 of them, are members of Gun Riders Motorcycle Club. The 4,921-km journey, spread over 20 days, will test their endurance and ability to ride in tough weather conditions.
The bikers will start from RTO Circle on Wednesday morning on their Royal Enfields. They will be riding 500 km every day. On the hilly terrain, they plan to cover 250 km per day. Last year, the motorcyclists had covered the entire distance in 13 days. But that meant compromising on sightseeing. That is the reason, this year, they have extended their trip by a week.
Of these bikers, five will be joining the road trip from Jammu. They will be leaving the city for Jammu in a train. The route these bikers will be taking is Ahmedabad-Delhi- Jammu-Pahalgam-Srinagar-Gulmarg-Kargil-Leh-Khardung La-Leh-Sarchu-Manali-Panipat-Pushkar-Ahmedabad. By July 3, they will be back to the city. Except for two bikers, all are new members of the club and this is their first trip to Khardungla.
Manish Patel, who is going to Khardung La for the second time, said: “Last year, we covered the entire distance in just 13 days. But we did not get much time to have fun and enjoy nature’s beauty. This time, we plan to make the most of it. These bikers have the capacity to cover 700-900 km in a day.”
The club trains the members in bike repairing and riding techiques before an expedition, so that problems encountered during the journey can be easily dealt with. “Everyone is so excited about the trip. There are no words to describe the experience. You have to go on a bike journey to feel what we feel,” adds Patel.
Anil Goyal, who is going for the first time, said: “It was my dream to ride up north on a bike. I bought a Royal Enfield after joining the club. I have travelled on the bike to Udaipur, Ajmer and Chittorgarh. I can’t really wait for Wednesday. My family members are very supportive. They are as excited as I am.”
The club also engages members in a lot of social activities. They also offer workshops on bike maintenance. “Our club is quite popular among the collegians in the city. We have carried out awareness campaigns in the colleges,” said Vishal Meni, another member.
