The Class XII science stream passouts of Gujarat State Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board this year are a fortunate lot. They won’t have to go miles away from home to pursue their career goals, thanks to ample seats in professional courses in the state.
Total 68,147 students of science stream passed out this year. They can choose from 52,000 seats in the institutions offering medical, paramedical, engineering and pharmacy courses in the state. Considering a few would opt for general stream and some would fail to clear Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET), there would be ample options for the passouts eligible to pursue professional courses.
Education Minister Raman Vora said: “The Plus Two science students of the Gujarat board will not have to go to other states for pursing medical and engineering courses this year. There are enough seats in the state.”
Students passing out with physics, chemistry and maths (Group A) as combination will vie for the 45,000 seats in engineering and pharmacy courses. This year, 51,711 students have passed out in Group A. Last year, the number of seats available to the Group A students was 40,000.
In the medical and paramedical stream, the number of seats available in the state is over 7,000. Only Group B students studying biology as a compulsory subject are eligible for these seats. The total passouts in this group are 16,180. They are eligible for pursuing pharmacy courses as well.
With the availability of seats in professional courses increasing, the demand for management seats in medical and engineering colleges would plummet this year. “The fee charged for management seats will go down considerably this year. Earlier, a student had to pay over Rs 10 lakh as donation for admission against management seat. But the colleges won’t be able to charge so much this year because the availability of seats will be more than the demand this year,” said a source.
While the rise in number of seats in professional courses is a boon for students, it will be a bane for colleges offering general stream courses for sure. Several seats in such institutions are likely to remain vacant, as students would prefer to join a professional course simply for placements.
