Using duplicate answer scripts in Gujarat University (GU) exams can no more be a viable option for copycats. For, the varsity is all set to introduce specially-designed answer sheets having 16 security features, a few of them hidden, from this session. With watermark and barcode, any attempt to replace them with duplicates will prove futile.
Come April 8, GU students will get the first look-and-feel of the new answer papers. In the first phase, varsity has placed print order for 25,00,000 answer scripts having special security features. Each answer script would cost the varsity Rs 4.90.
Displaying the newly designed answer sheet in front of this correspondent on Sunday evening, GU Vice-Chancellor Parimal Trivedi said: “Answer scripts with so many security features are being introduced for the first time in Gujarat. Every page of each answer sheet will have seven hidden security features.”

Each new answer script will have a unique barcode on top of its front page. A matrix code on top right of the front page of answer sheets minimises the possibility of duplication. Besides, threads binding the pages of answer scripts together bear the monogram of the varsity. But it’s in naked eyes. It can be sighted only by passing utltraviolet (UV) ray through it.
That’s not all. In a bid to avoid any chance of fudging, different colours have been used for instructions on top of each page of answer scripts. The colour of the margin also varies from page to page. The abbreviation of the varsity — GU — has been printed in minute font size on the margin of each page. That too cannot be seen with naked eyes. Besides these, each page will have several other hidden features that can be detected using UV guns only.
The Gujarat University decided to introduce the security features in its answer scripts following reports of their fudging by a few unscrupulous elements over the years. Trivedi said: “It’s difficult to establish if students actually used duplicate answer scripts or not in the past. But we don’t want to take any chance. So we are all set introduce answer sheets with special security features.”
In an attempt to avoid any goof-up while distribution in different centres, the varsity will maintain a database of answer scripts sent to each examination hall. The centres have been advised to maintain record of answer scripts given to each examinee. These data will also be uploaded on the server.
