Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University announced on Tuesday that it would conduct an online aptitude test for inmates of Sabarmati Central Jail to help them identify their abilities. The vice-chancellor of the varsity, Manoj Soni, said that it would analyse results of inmates who appear for the test and then offer them customised courses.
“‘Need Analysis’ Test will help us learn strengths and weaknesses of prisoners. We want to offer them courses that can help them get jobs and acceptance in society after they serve their terms,” Soni said. “We will scrutinise their results and customise courses keeping in mind their needs.”
The test will be conducted today, on Thursday and Friday. A van with computers will be parked on the premises of the Sabarmati jail for this purpose. Additional DGP P C Thakur said that 220 prisoners would take the online exam, which will be in English and Hindi. “Once an inmate finishes his term, he deserves a chance to work and re-enter society,” he said.
A Pune-based company, Global Talent Track, has helped the Ambedkar university prepare the test format. “After the exam is conducted and results analysed, a five-member committee will hold a meeting to decide which courses should be customised and offered to prisoners,” Soni said.
The open university, he said, was also considering to conduct ‘Need Analysis Test’ for prisoners of jails in other parts of the state. Interestingly, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is supporting Ambedkar university’s to help people serving jail terms re-enter the mainstream. It will help people who are released from the Sabarmati jail get jobs.
Soni also said that the high-tech van operated by the varsity would travel to remote parts of the state from April 18 and May 15 to hold an exam similar to ‘Need Analysis Test’ for college students and schoolchildren. “We want to help students identify a course or field suiting their aptitude,” he said. “By scrutinising results of students, we will be able to design new courses that can meet industry demand.”
