Soon, you will be able to obtain definition of tricky words and terms by simply tapping your mobile phone. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU) is planning to launch an encyclopaedia for cellphone users in May. The vice-chancellor of the varsity, Manoj Soni, said that the ‘mobipaedia’ would benefit students the most.
“We are in the process of preparing a database of words and various concepts,” he said. “Once the mobile encyclopaedia, called ‘Gyaan Bindu’, is launched, anyone will be able to obtain information instantly by simply sending an SMS to a fixed number.”
Interestingly, people who seek meanings of words and terms on their mobile phones won’t have to pay additional charges that many SMS services demand. They will have to pay only regular SMS charges.
“Once a person SMSes the word to our service, he/she will be sent a text message containing its meaning. The message will not contain more than 150 words,” Soni said.
The open university is in talks with a leading mobile service provider for ‘Gyaan Bindu’. “We hope the deal materialises because the company’s network covers even remote areas (of the state), where many students don’t have access to internet,” he said.
The Ambedkar university is also working on a special feature which will enable students to access sound files of interesting topics on their cellphones. “For instance, if someone wants to learn about Agni missles, he/she can send an SMS to our service. We will send a link of an audio file of APJ Abdul Kalam’s talk on the topic,” Soni said.
The BAOU vice-chancellor said that efforts were on to start a “virtual university”. “We will provide study material in form of PDF files to not just our students, but also others,” he said.

How will ‘mobipaedia’ work
