The Gujarat Education Department has put hold recruitment of secondary teachers following the passing of the Gujarat Education Law Amendment Act in the Assembly on Friday.
Principal secretary, higher education Hasmukh Adhia confirmed this. “Yes, recruitments of secondary school teachers have been halted following Friday’s development.”
There are close to 4,500 vacancies for teachers across the state.
Sources in the education department said, “With class 8 now being being included in the primary section, teachers who have been recruited will become surplus. Additional recruitments will only add to the surplus numbers.”
Adhia said, “The system of recruitment of secondary teachers is also being redesigned.” According to Adhia, three Acts were modified under the amendment. One of them was doing away with recruit process of secondary school teachers in which representatives of SSC board, trust committees and DEO committees were involved. “Now, the government will prescribe the system which is currently being redesigned,” he said. Sources said the changes in the Act are to avoid corruption and favourism.
Former president of Ahmedabad Principals Association Jayanti Patel said, “For the last seven years, there have been no recruitments in Ahmedabad. The quality of education has deteriorated and the government is responsible for this.” Patel said the transition period given to get class 8 under the primary section will further delay the recruitments.
