While most college professors would do anything to rid campuses of mobile phone cacophony, at L M College of Pharmacy it is being promoted as a must-have gadget.
This because the college professors transmit power point slides of important chapters and pdf files via bluetooth to their students’ cellphones. The points-to-remember are sent as SMSes. The college staff has converted the so-called ‘nuisance’ into a valuable teaching tool, much to the delight of the students.
This new mode of teaching is a huge hit with the B Pharm and M Pharm students who can access important chapters with fingertip ease.
Revision anywhere, anytime
The best part of this innovative teaching method is that it facilitates revision of the content anytime, anywhere.
“Most of us only take into account the negative impact of mobile phones and overlook the constructive side of technology. Looking at the growing popularity of cellphones and the increasing use of its applications, we thought of utilising it to the optimum so as to make education easily accessible to students. We have been using the medium for past two months and it is very popular among students,” said Principal Mukesh Goyal.
Effective learning medium
Propagating this new tool, Goyal said more colleges and schools should adopt the medium for a trendy and effective learning process. “Maps, pictures and videos can easily sent to the students. All they need is get a phone with bluetooth. Even school teachers can use this method. It is effective in those institutes that have inadequate infrastructure and lack enough professors,” added Goyal.
Professor Rajesh Parikh said: “By using video cutter, I have made power point presentations on several topics and transmitted these to students’ mobile phones. Now, they can revise the lessons according to their convenience. Though we came across the idea in a foreign journal, we have customised it to make teaching through cellphone more effective and student-friendly.”

Eco-friendly and cost-effective
The use of mobile phones for transmitting educational content has reduced the use of papers to a great extent, promoting a ‘go-green’ culture at the campus. Students use cellphones to exchange notes and formulae.
“Since the notes and reference material are in electronic form, we don’t really need to maintain these. The study material is error-free and even the students can submit their presentations through their handsets, said Krushit Sheth, an M Pharm student.
Prachi, another M Pharm student, said: “Education and technology work wonders when they go hand-in-hand. It’s time we reviewed the use of technology and devised ways to optimise its use. Mobile phones are handy as no extra apparatus is required. These can store a huge amount of data that can also be transferred to the home computer.”
