After a hue and cry over ‘fixation’ of salaries for college teachers as per the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations for the past two months, the higher education department has decided to set up a new committee to look into the grievances of lecturers.
According to the principals association, certain vested interests had asked lecturers to shell out Rs 800 on an individual basis and submit their service books to fast-track their new payscales.
President of the Gujarat University-affiliated College Principals Association Saurabh Chowksi said, “At our meeting today (Sunday) we took up this issue. It also came to our notice that some adyapak mandal members were charging money for taking up the ‘fixation’ work.”
We informed the higher education department about it. And the department has taken a decision to hold the next meeting at the collector’s office and set up a new committee on ‘fixation’.”
According to Chowksi, when their meeting was on, some city colleges received calls to take back the ‘fixation’ money the lecturers had paid and their service books.
The Adyapak Mandal, however, begs to differ. K S Shastri, its president, said, “This is done to tarnish the image of the mandal. The allegations are without basis.”
A lecturer, who did not wish to be named, said, “The money that is taken to speed up our ‘fixation’ work is nominal compared to the amount that we will get. The clerk who takes up the work has to fill up the 42-column ‘fixation’ form, other forms plus prepare CDs, and also do the rounds of the higher education department in Gandhinagar.
“A small mistake in filling the form and we might go into another grade. It would take at least six months to get it rectified.”
Saurashtra University and Bhavnagar University have already fixed the new scales of their departments, however, Gujarat University is still to do so, even two months after it announced the new scales.
