For the past several years, organising a convocation has been the prerogative of government-recognised varsities.
Now, an educational group affiliated with the Gujarat University (GU) has decided to cross the barrier by organising its own convocation. JG Group of Colleges, which has 14 campuses across the city, has firmed up plans to hold a passing-out ceremony every year.
The group’s director, Saurabh Chokshi, told Mirror that the move was aimed at making passing-out a memorable experience for students.
“One rarely gets to see any enthusiasm among students at ceremonies held at GU and other universities. Many, in fact, skip the function. Usually, only those youngsters who have topped exams attend the ceremony to collect their medals,” he said.
“Others collect their degrees later. We want to bid farewell to our students properly, so we will hold a function of our own.” An estimated 1,500 students pass out from JG group’s 14 colleges every year.
“The first passing-out ceremony will take place in July this year. At the function, we will award well-performing students with medals. Certificates will be formally distributed among all students,” Chokshi said. “We will even invite parents.” The JG director said that certificates the institute would hand out to its students would be more attractive than the ones given by the GU.
“For the July event, we are planning to invite Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the chief guest,” he said. “After the function, we will start a placement process to help our students get jobs.”
