Next time you want to reach Mumbai fast with some ailing person, book tickets on Duronto Express without second thoughts. For, it will have doctors on board from next week.
A general duty medical officer and a paramedical staff will be on duty on Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Mumbai Duronto Express with medical kits to attend to medical emergencies for free. Ashok Garud, the Divisional Railway Manager of Ahmedabad, said: “Doctors from Mumbai will be travelling on Duronto Express.”
The Western Railway took the initiative of deputing doctors on the non-stop train plying between Mumbai and Ahmedabad following the decision of Indian Railways to depute a general duty medical officer and a paramedical staff in all Duronto (end-to-end nonstop) trains as a pilot project for a year.
Two berths in an AC two tier compartment of Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Mumbai Duronto Express would be earmarked for the doctor and the paramedical staff. They will be travelling with medical equipment like ECG, ophthalmoscope, glucometer, defibrillators, portable suction apparatus, oxygen cylinders and nebulisers.
The mechanical and electrical departments have been told to make necessary modifications in coaches to provide oxygen cylinder holders, drip set holders, and extra lighting for patient management and extra plug points for resuscitation equipment.
In case a passenger travelling on Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Mumbai Duronto Express shows signs of illness, the doctor and the para-medical staff on board will examine him/her. The medical team will be allowed to move the person to a designated patient-care sick bay on the train — the two berths earmarked for the medical staff.
If the doctor decides the ailing passenger needs to be detrained, the train superintendent will stop the train at the nearest station having medical facilities. The station manager will be responsible for transferring the patient from the station to the nearest medical centre.
