Necessity is the mother of invention. So when Ramanlal Tirkar’s scooter conked out on a rainy day due to a blown spark plug, he decided to invent a better one. And that he did. The gritty 70-year-old’s application for a patent is under process.
Tirkar says his invention can be serviced, used in any vehicle, has a longer life and increases engine efficiency. It is also a solution for starting trouble, he says, as Tirkar explains the making of the device.
The spark plug for an internal combustion engine is made from stainless steel and comprises a center electrode, plug shell, ground lectrode, a height adjusting bolt, an insulator, outer jacket, gasket, terminal nut washer and a lock nut.
The speciality of this spark plug, Tirkar says, is that each part can be dismantled for easier cleaning and maintenance. The C-shaped ground electrode gives larger sparking area till the ground electrode. This causes complete combustion of air-fuel mixture and improves engine efficiency.
Another novel feature, according to Tirkar, is the adjustable centre electrode. Its height can be adjusted with a bolt. This means longer life for the spark plug.
Tirkar received formal education only till SSC. “I worked to fund my education. After SSC, I had to chart out my own course,” says Tirkar. After a vocational course in machinery repair, he began working for textile mills, taking contracts for repairs.
“I always loved machines,” says Tirkar who spent nine years and nearly Rs 9 lakh behind his invention. His wife’s gold ornaments were pawned and fixed deposits used up. “I still owe people Rs 5 lakh,” he says in a toothless grin.
The patent certificate will be fitting reward to all of Tirkar’s hard work. “I don’t have the money for production. I have begun approaching companies which can pay me royalty for my invention,” says Tirkar.
