In an age of fast-changing technology, educational institutions are doing their best to match steps with the latest. After websites and blogs, community networking sites are the latest for schools to keep parents of students updated about who’s winning what and what’s happening when. Udgam School for Children’s Facebook page is a brimming example of how a school remains connected with parents in an easier, faster and interactive way.
The school, which created its ID on November 18, 2009, has 704 fans (read parents). The number is steadily increasing. The school feels that being on the networking site has helped in getting quick responses from parents, and is interactive unlike normal websites.
All activities that the school organises, news about achievements by students in and out of school and important announcements are posted on Facebook. Comments and suggestions are instant. The school does not want to stop at this. Managing trustee Manan Chokshi says: “We are trying to get more hi-tech.”
The school, Chokshi said, has given laptops to all its teachers and is on the way to making the campus a WiFi zone. A system which communicates a student’s presence or absence to parents through SMS is already in place. “The Facebook ID is another attempt to take communication with parents further. They can access the site anytime and from anywhere,” says Chokshi.
At a later stage, this can become a platform for discussion on issues relating to education system, he says.
