With elections for students’ representatives in the Gujarat University Senate round the corner, contestants in the fray are trying to outsmart each other in electioneering taking innovative routes. While a few are trying to woo voters online, some are showering gifts. But NSUI’s Krishna Patel stands out.
Contesting for the prestigious UG Commerce seat, Patel is distributing photocopies of question papers of previous years among students to help them prepare for final exams. She thought it would be the perfect way to woo voters.
Collecting the question papers of previous years of B Com, BBA and BCA from the varsity store, she photocopied them placing her visiting card on them. Thereafter, she started distributing them among students.
Patel said: “With exams round the corner, I thought question papers of previous years would do a world of good to students. Whenever they take mock tests at home or hostel, the papers of the last two years will remind them about me. I have distributed the papers among all the 500 students in the voters’ list.”
Asserting that wining the election was not the sole goal of her innovative method of campaigning, Patel said: “I want to work for the cause of students. I have started doing it from my campaigning. My initiative will help students score high marks in exams. If elected, I promise to fight for the cause of girl students of the varsity.”
While Patel seems to have struck the right cord — results of students — distributing question papers of previous years, she is also campaigning online. Besides, her campaigners are distributing pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners among voters to ensure she clinched the prestigious UG Commerce seat that witnesses maximum splurge in electioneering every year.

Going innovative: Krishna Patel (left) and Suprit Patel

Patel’s challenger, Suprit Patel of ABVP, has taken the social networking site route to woo voters. He has constituted a five-member team exclusively for connecting to his voters through Facebook and Orkut. SMS campaigning is also his forte.
Suprit said: “I want to speak about students’ grievances at the senate. They face several problems. I want to work address their problems so that they concentrate on studies.”
The polls for electing the students’ representatives in GU Senate would be conducted on February 7. Results will be declared on February 9.
This year, 36 students are in the fray. Two contenders of ABVP — Ashish Bojak from medical faculty and Vandil Patel from dental — have been elected unopposed.
Last year, the 10 seats were split between NSUI and ABP equally. Each won five seats.
