The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has decided to conduct the entrance test for MBA and MCA aspirants early this year. Sources in the varsity said that the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GCET) would be held in May instead of July.
The move, they say, is aimed at helping MBA and MCA colleges finish their admission procedures earlier and ending uncertainty students face when their enrolments are delayed.
In 2009, an estimated 23,000 students eyeing a degree in business administration or computer applications took GCET in July. An online GCET was introduced by the GTU for the first time last year.

‘Move will benefit MBA, MCA aspirants’
“The two-hour test will be held earlier this year because the varsity wants to reduce the time students have to wait to decide whether they want to get admitted to an MBA or MCA college in Gujarat or pursue a course in some other state,” the sources said. “If GCET is conducted in May, then colleges can start their admission process by June instead of September or October. They can also begin their classes earlier.”
The move to advance GCET will cut the waiting period for students by nearly three months. “GTU will declare the merit list in the second week of June after students of arts, science and commerce get their third-year results,” the sources said.

‘Expect glitch-free GCET this year’
Meanwhile, a GTU official, who didn’t want to be named, said that efforts would be made to improve online GCET. Last year, GCET applicants faced a rash of technical glitches such as computer breakdowns while taking the two-hour test online. Some even complained of inconsistency in level of difficulty of the test. They had claimed they had to answer many difficult questions, while their peers were able to romp through the exam.
“This year, GTU will ensure students don’t face any snags while taking GCET,” the official said. “Besides, the varsity has introduced a system wherein students can appear for the exam twice. The attempt in which he/she scores the most marks will be considered while preparing the merit list.”
To end anxiety about GCET result among applicants, the GTU will give them a printout of their scorecards immediately after the exam.
