They are calling it annual project 2009-10. Members of Vidyavihar Kul, the alumni association of CN Vidyalaya are out on a cause. Actually, three causes - khadi, environment and education. A grand rally which the Vidyavihar Kul is organising on February 7 will be the beginning of its initiative. The alumni association plans to collect Rs 72 lakh this year through sponsors; from this, it has pledged to use Rs 60 lakh for its objectives.
The association wants to set aside Rs 25 lakh for the scholarships, Rs 10 lakh for promoting khadi, Rs 15 lakh for the green cultivation project and Rs 10 lakh for the state government’s Kanya Kelvani Project.
Alumni members say khadi is losing popularity despite it being environment and economy-friendly.
“The kul, keeping alive CN Vidyalaya’s tradition, wants to promote its use. The fabric is a symbol of self-employment,” said kul secretary Nikhil Shah, adding that the kul will ensure that Rs 10 lakh it has allocated meets the purpose.
So, all participants at the rally will be given a khadi ‘guru’ shirt instead of a regular T-shirt.
The kul has decided to institute the Snehrashmi Kuldipak scholarship of Rs 5,000 each, which will go to 24 CN Vidyalaya students from classes 5 to 12 every year.
The scholarships will be funded from the interest accrued from a fixed deposit of Rs 25 lakh. The kul also plans to donate Rs 10 lakh to the state government’s Kenya Kelavani Project (education of the girl child). Kul members feel that environmental causes cannot wait. “We will do whatever wwe can for the environment and Rs 15 lakh will be spent for the cause through cultivations,” said Shah.
The association was etablished in December 1977 and disbanded a few years later. It was revived in 2004 and is now 3,400-member strong with students from batches of 1948 to 2006. “Seventy members are currently working on this project of ours,” he said.

THE RALLY
This rally to be held on February 7 targets participation of 5,000 people including top names like Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Anil Ambani, Gautam Adani to name a few. The open-to-all event will have running, walking, cycling and roller-skating. Routes have been charted out and distances decided. The cycling rally will cover 16 kms, skaters have been given a 4-km route, runners will have 8 kms to cover while walkers will get 4 km.
