A sense of uncertainty has gripped 550 second shift students of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 in Shahibaug with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) deciding to merge it with the first from April 1 this year. In a letter issued on January 13, KVS has directed the KV No. 1 to merge its classes in the second shift with those in the first. All students of second shift would be accommodated in the first shift and a few might be sent to nearby KVs, it stated.

Adjustment problems
Despite the assurance, the second shift students of KV No. 1 in Shahibaug are a worried lot. They believe it would be difficult for them to adopt to new timings. They are also afraid of going to new schools. The decision of KVS has come as a rude shock to guardians of the second shift students of KVS No. 1.
One of them said: “The second shift has been functioning from 2005 and students have got adjusted to it. Now, they will need time to adjust with the new timings. We are yet to hear from the school authorities on the issue.”
Another parent said: “Kendriya Vidyalayas are inexpensive and provide quality education. KVS should increase the number of schools run by it. But it is doing just the opposite.” KV No. 1 principal, M K Kulshrestha, declined to comment on the issue.
However, sources said, “There is a possibility that the second shift will be operated in private-public partnership from 2011. Merging shifts will ensure there is no opposition to the PPP later.” The second shift from 12.30 pm to 5.30 pm started at KV No 1 in 2005.

Aftershocks

♦ If both the shifts are merged, the number of students in each class will increase. It may lead to decline in the quality of education imparted at KVs
♦ The city has six KVs. If some students from KV No. 1 in Shahibaug are shifted to other KVs, there might be a problem in fresh admissions
♦ Students getting transferred from other cities will also have problem in getting admission
