The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board have issued notices to 2,511 teachers for mistakes in assessment of class 12 board examination answersheets. A teacher, who has made the mistake of giving a mark less to a deserving student, will have to pay up Rs 100 as penalty, the GSHSEB said.
The mistakes came to light after students applied for reassessment. A top board official told Mirror that the teachers have either failed to check entire answers or to assign marks for the same, while some have faulted in totalling marks and some in carrying forward marks.
The official, however, said the blunders have reduced considerably compared to 2008 after the board took strict measures.
“In class 12, only 921 teachers made mistakes in 2009 as against 2,297 in 2008. This is a reduction of over 50 per cent.” The official added, while 401 teachers of science stream bungled in 2009 as against 1,379 in 2008, 520 teachers of commerce stream goofed up in 2009 as against 918 in 2008.
Parents, however, are not happy with the complacency shown by teachers in assessing answersheets. “These mistakes are revealed only in answersheets of students who go in for reassessment. Only five to seven per cent of the students go in for reassessment.
A majority of students do not trust the system and feel that nothing will come up in reassessement and it is merely a waste of time and energy. More mistakes are bound to come up if these students go in for reassessment,” a parent of a student whose marks increased after reassessment told Mirror.
“Such mistakes of a few marks can change careers of students,” the parent said. However, the board official said, sterner measures are being considered for teachers who make mistakes so that students do not suffer academically.
