What do college students usually do after classes? Hang out at kitlis or tuck into some fast food. Well, this group of Science students is zara hat ke.
Students of M G Science Institute spend more than two hours every alternate day to teach children of class four service providers of the university.
As part of the Chiranjeevi movement started by them in 2006, students of class 4 to 9 are given tuition in all subjects from 2.30-5.30 pm at the institute campus every alternate day. Saturdays are usually reserved for fun activities such as yoga and movie screenings, in which parents are also invited to participate.
“Most of the learners are students of municipal schools. They haven’t grasped the basic principles of Maths, vocabulary and even the alphabet. For example, a class 10 student we taught barely knew the English alphabet. We try to give personalised attention and follow up with their parents to monitor their progress. We often have to persuade parents to send their kids or even escort them home,” MSc student and Chiranjeevi coordinator Richa Shah said.
The volunteers spend money from their own pocket or raise funds from relatives and friends to buy stationery and course material for the kids.
Another volunteer Purvi Jhaveri said, “We get a lot of satisfaction from teaching them, even though it is tough sometimes to juggle our own studies and exams with their schedule.”
