Gujarat University is experimenting with the art of teaching students science in the most effective way possible. It has come up with five computer-animated films on Zoology topics to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding of chemical processes at the molecular level.
The 30-minute movies, made at a cost of Rs 10 lakh, are on topics: ABC of largest phytum - Arthropoda, structural organisation and classification of non-chordates, principles and salient features of animal classification, cell theory and diversity of cell size and shape.
These will now be uploaded on YouTube by the varsity for the benefit of not only GU students but those from across the world. The videos will also be uploaded on the Gujarat University website with links to other related sites.
That is not all. Students can also lay their hands on the voice-over script that will be displayed on a side of the screen. It will help students make their notes and prepare for the exams.
“With the help of novel teaching methods like computer animation, science learning and teaching is more interesting and motivating. It is more engrossing and provides a stimulus for exploration and thinking. It also helps in building the scientific temper,” says Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi.
The university is now planning to make 900 films on various topics to help students learn better. Varsity has also received Rs 7 crore grant for making animation films. Next project will be on topics covering life sciences and space science syllabus, say sources.
