Class 10 Board exams likely to go by 2013

Recommendations of 15-member committee include making SSC Board exams optional, besides introducing semester system in classes 11 and 12 from 2010

Three members of the 15-member committee formed by the state education board to look into the examination process of classes 10, 11 and 12 have submitted the final draft of the recommendations to the panel for their approval before it is submitted to the government. The panel will meet on October 23 to approve the draft before it is sent to the government.
According to a Board source, the panel has suggested doing away with the Board exams for Class 10 by 2013. In the meantime, the panel has proposed sweeping changes for classes 10, 11 and 12.

For Class 10
♦ Students will be given Tests A and B of 50 marks each.
♦ Those intending not to study after Std 10 will have to appear only for Test A.
♦ Those wanting to pick science or commerce stream in Class 11 will have to take both Test A and B.
♦ In Test A, there will be simple objective questions, while in Test B, the questions, though objective, will be skill and application-based.
♦ Those clearing Test A will be able to pursue 76 vocational courses.
♦ Those opting for polytechnic will have to take an entrance test.

Semester system for 11, 12
♦ Both classes will have two semesters each.
♦ Semesters 1 to 3 will have objective type questions.
♦ In the fourth semester, 50 per cent will be objective and 50 per cent essay-type questions
♦ The final result will be based on 25 per cent marks from each of the four semesters
♦ Modules for each semester will be prepared and new textbooks introduced
♦ The first semester will begin in October 2010.
♦ A student who fails in one semester will be allowed to keep term and can take the exam in the next   semester
