City schools, which have been wary about the use of technology, are now embracing it at a feverish pace to deal with truants and to strengthen security on their campuses. A school in Vastrapur, Nirman High School, has installed a system which automatically records time of students’ entry and exit from the campus, and quickly dispatches SMS alerts to parents when their children skip classes.
Officials of the school say the system also helps keep intruders at bay by sounding an alarm every time a person enters the campus without authorisation, i.e. without a specially designed electronic card.
Apart from this, the system — called ‘Electronic Educational Alert & Security Management System’ — apprises parents of their wards’ performance in classroom and in exams through text messages.
“We have been putting the system through paces for the past few days; the results have been encouraging,” the managing trustee of Nirman school, Ashish Desai, said told Mirror. “We will officially inaugurate it on Thursday.” Desai that the system would be installed at other branches of Nirman school in the coming months.
“Parents remain quite worried about their children. They always try to find out whether their wards are attending classes properly or are on a bunking spree. This system will keep them posted about every detail concerning their children,” he said.
Desai said that the school, which has about 3,000 students, would be able to inform parents about events on campus with help of the system, informally known as E-SMS. “We can even use it to send text alerts when we plan to remain closed,” he said.

How the system works
Interestingly, the system is linked with scanners and CCTV cameras. Every time a student enters the school, the scanners, installed at the entrance, record his/her attendance by detecting his/her electronic ID card. The scanners are so efficient that they scrutinise every detail — name, address, blood group — mentioned on the ID card.
The CCTV cameras, which are installed at various places on the school’s campus, help monitor students’ behaviour. If a student resorts to indiscipline, the system alerts his/her parents
