M G Science Institute and St Xavier’s College are the only two science colleges in the city and among the 27 colleges across the country who have been granted financial aid by the Centre under a special scheme to strengthen life science and biotechnology training and education at the undergraduate level.
The colleges have been identified for their good work and ones which provide academic and physical infrastructure for achieving excellence in teaching and unique exposure to students for experimental science. This will encourage more students to take up life science as a career.
The aid under the Star College Scheme by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, is to improve critical thinking and ‘hands on’ experimental work in the cutting edge-technologies needed for modern biological studies at undergraduate level in life science.
Under this scheme, M G Science will be given Rs 54 lakh for two years. Six departments of the college, namely microbiology, biochemistry, botany, mathematics, zoology and statistics will receive a non-recurring grant of Rs 5 lakh each, and a recurring grant of Rs 2 lakh each in the first and second years.
Dr B K Jain, principal of the institute, said, “We will make all efforts to provide excellent research facilities to the students and faculty, besides providing infrastructure and improving education quality.”
Father Vinayak Jadav, acting principal of St Xavier’s College, said, “The around Rs 50-lakh aid that we have received from the Department of Biotechnology will be utilised for the development of biotechnology and research.”

Activities to be performed as part of Star College

For faculty
♦ Faculty improvement programme
♦ Participation in Summer courses for skill upgradation
♦ Curriculum change to ensure more ‘hands-on’ laboratory work
♦ Greater emphasis on communicating research and research process to students
♦ Introduce internal review process by students
♦ Feedback from students regarding competence of faculty, adequacy of teaching / laboratory environment and additional needs, if any
♦ Continue to think and assess use of funds to improve teaching/learning

For students
♦ Students training through summer training, industry visits.
♦ Use of IT in classroom, laboratory and library activities
♦ Inclusion of techniques for ‘hands-on’ training
