A deserted L D Engineering College was put on tight security on Kali Chaudas on Friday. Reason? Every year, for the past 12 years, thieves have managed to break the lock of at least one of its many departments and escape with things like lab equipment, pens and footrulers. Like Gujarati New Year is considered auspicious for businessmen, Kali Chaudas is considered to bring in prosperity for thieves, robbers and conmen for the entire year if they get away with the booty on this day.
With students gone on Diwali vacation, the college wears a deserted look. Only a rector and few more staff members are present at the college. Every year, a theft is detected in some or the other department on Diwali day.
“It could be in a laboratory or a classroom. We also find stains of saffron on the floor indicating that even black magic is performed here,” says a source adding, “There is a murmur that insiders are involved in this job, though we have not caught anyone red-handed.”
Principal M N Patel said: “I have been here for the past five years now. And every year on Kali Chaudas a theft takes place in this college. This year, however, we have tightened the security. Guards have been asked to be alert. Even the rector and staff members have been asked to keep a watch on the goings on. I too will go on rounds today (Friday night).”
To find out whether the measures taken by the college will prevent a theft this year check out this space tomorrow.
