After khaman and dhokla, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is planning to dish out more Gujarati delicacies to passengers boarding Rajdhani Express from Ahmedababd. If all goes well, khichdi-kadhi would be included on the menu of the prestigious train of Indian Railways within a couple of months.
The new delicacies will be served on Rajdhani after the construction of swanky base kitchen at Ahmedabad railway station is over.
Chief Regional Manager of IRCTC, Ahmedabad, Pravin Parmar said: “We will start serving khichdi-kadhi on Rajdhani from December. We will prepare them in our new base kitchen, which should be ready before December.” The decision to serve khichdi-kadi on Rajdhani is aimed at making Gujarati passengers feel at home while travelling. It will also enable passengers from other states taste Gujarati dishes.
“We want all passengers on board to taste khichdi-kadhi. But those declining to have it will be served other dishes,” Parmar said, adding that IRCTC is conducting a survey to get a rough idea on how many Gujaratis travel on Rajdhani Express every day.
Based on the findings of the survey, IRCTC will decide if more Gujarati delicacies will be included on the menu of Rajdhani Express. If the study reveals that majority of the passenger are Gujaratis, IRCTC will start serving khandvi, pathra and handvo as well.
IRCTC had served fafda-jalebi, a traditional Gujarati snack, to passengers of Ahmedabad-Delhi Rajdhani Express on Monday on the occasion of Dussehra. It was an instant hit.

Food for thought
For the past two months, IRCTC has been making efforts to improve customer service. It has taken over the catering, which was earlier outsourced to private contractors.
