Have you ever been in a rush to catch a train only to be stumped by the sea of humans barring the way to the Kalupur railway station’s main gate? Your woes will soon be a thing of past if the Ahmedabad railway division’s proposal to beautify the Concourse Hall is accepted by the Western Railway.
The Hall is where the ticketing counters are situated.
The proposal was drawn up after a senior Railway Board official suggested that counters for unreserved and platform tickets be moved elsewhere to reduce rush in this area. Divisional Railway Manager Ashok Garud said, “The plan is to shift the ticketing counters to a building that will come up at the parking lot near the main gate.”
This move will also help in securing the station as only those who carry a ticket will be allowed to enter the station building.
The Hall will receive a Rs 20-lakh facelift. “We will cover the hallway and pillars with aluminium sheets that are easy to clean. The walls will be decorated on the theme Gandhi and Gujarat. It will be covered in mosaic depicting Gandhian symbols, Navratri and popular tourist destinations to lend a local flavour,” said Garud.
Steel benches will be put up for people who have to wait for trains or visitors. “We will install new lights so that the place is brightly lit even at night. We are doing this so that anyone who has to wait here for 4-5 hours will get a positive vibe. Once the area is cleared, travellers will also be able to access the main gate easily,” the DRM added.
The Ahmedabad division is also focusing on platforms. They have used granite to cover the walls. This is easy to wash if people spit on it. “The RCC on platforms 1 and 2 were in a bad shape. To remove it entirely was not possible. So we are covering it with colourful granite slabs that will brighten up the place and will also be easy to clean. We will gradually cover the entire station,” said Garud.
About the building that will house the ticketing counters, the DRM said, “If the proposal is okayed, it will take us at least a year to construct the building.”
