Jo fafda-jalebi na hoye toh Dussehra na kehvaye. From the moment garba ends on the last day of Navratri till the evening of Dussehra, people throng farsaan shops to eat the traditional Dussehra snack.
Keeping this tradition of Gujaratis in mind, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for the first time served fafda-jalebi to passengers of the Ahmedabad-Delhi Rajdhani Express. On Monday evening, every passenger was served three jalebis and 100gm fafda with the mandatory accompaniments: kadhi and chutney.

Special treat a hit
IRCTC Chief Regional Manager Praveen Parmar said, “The special Dussehra dish was appreciated a lot by passengers. While Gujarati passengers were happy to sample the traditional delicacy, non-Gujarat residents enjoyed the novelty of the combination. Looking at the immense positive feedback from passengers, we plan to introduce more such special festival foods on days such as Diwali.”
Most passengers enjoyed the surprise treat, which sweetened their journey. Passenger Chinubhai Patel, a resident of Delhi, was very pleased with the gesture. “I didn’t expect to be served fafda-jalebi on the train. It felt good to savour the special Dussehra food on the day of festival.”

Better service,customised meals
For the past two months, IRCTC has been making efforts to improve customer service, besides adding variety and quality of food, served in Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express. They have taken over the catering which was earlier outsourced to private contractors.
Traditional Gujarati snacks such as khaman and dhokla have been introduced in the menu to cater to local tastes. Also introduced some time back was the ‘silver service’ in first class, where passengers get a chance to customise their meals, instead of having fixed number of items in a thali. For example, passengers can choose to have only paneer
